Stage Profile

Barentsburg is coal mining town located on the western coast of Svalbard Island, which is located about 600 miles north of Norway. It's also about that far away from the North Pole as well, making for low temperatures all year long. The fight appears to take place on either the frozen-over harbor that the town is located next to. Two questions concerning about the geography of the place must be asked: Why would the fighters want to fight in this weather, and how on earth did the WWN (the news organization covering the tournament) pick up on their location so quickly? Whatever the case, it makes for a boring background at first.

Stage Quirks

Three polar bears are the only ones able to see the fight at first, but moments after the first round begins, an icebreaker pulls up, banners shoot out, crowds gather on bridges, and an announcer and his cameraman perch themsevles front and center to call the action. A neat touch about the national flags in the background is that at least one fighter is represented in the game from those respective countries. That's really all there is to say about this stage, other than it's still really cold out there.

Barentsburg might be the only stage where a static background can give certain characters an advantage. Anyone with a Reppuken or similar lightly-colored ground projectile (Geese, Rock, Iori) can give human opponents a hard time, simply because the color of the thing they're trying to avoid is the same color as the background. This is a lot harder to deal with for someone playing P- or K-Groove, since they almost can't see what they want to parry or JD.
