Family's first big tournament for the new year had SBO qualifiers for Third Strike and Capcom Fighting Evolution. The main events were the 3S team tournaments on both nights and Tekken 5 on Sunday, but Saturday night was when the CvS2 tournament was scheduled. A record 41 people signed up, and at $5 a pop, over $200 was up for grabs, with the winner getting $140.
The tournament was supposed to start at 2:00 pm, but because of the larger than expected turnout, things were pushed all the way back to 5:00 that evening, and because of the later start, the format was cut down to single matches in the early rounds instead of the advertised 2 out of 3. Due to the conflicts with the 5 on 5 Third Strike finals, the CvS2 tournament didn't get finished up until 2:00 am early next morning.
Combofiend and Ricky Ortiz were favored coming in, and the seeding in the brackets show that. It was inevitable that they were going to face each other in the finals, and sure enough, they met each other in the last round of the winners bracket. Combo took 2 out of 3 from Ricky, sending him down to the losers final.
The losers finals had Ricky make short work of FFA local John, including a Vega OCV to finish him off. Then, in the Grand Final, Ricky and Combofiend met up again to settle things. Combo started off on the right foot with the first win, but after that Ricky wouldn't go down again, winning three straight (including another Vega OCV) to force another set, and then winning three more in a row to claim the tournament and get a nice payday.
The tournament had a lot of new faces from all of California. It's good to see a lot of new players start to try their luck with tournaments, and hopefully things will stay that way the rest of the year as we head toward Evolution 2005.
